Mensa Genius Workbook (Mensa)
Published in Paperback by Book Sales (March, 2000)
Author: Josephine Fulton
Average review score:

Disappointing
This is the first book I have ever seen that includes a "spatial" section with questions that involve arithmetic, the alphabet, and other logical classification questions that involve no spatial abilities. It's really quite sad.

As a book revealing genius, it's a failure, and, as my previous comments indicate, the included tests are inadequate.

It's actually quite disturbing that a society like Mensa has developed such a poor thinking/I.Q./puzzle book like this (amongst a few others as well).

mensa ain't what it's cracked up to be
This is an average puzzle book with some fatuous, silly remarks about the true nature of genius thrown in. If this is the best that the high IQ crowd can come up with, God help us all.

Mediocre
The above poster sounds a bit disgruntled...

The book is not as bad as he seems to imply (although it is no masterpiece). It is no better than an average puzzle book, and that may be the most disappointing part. On the back of the book it states, "Intelligence and genius are often confused, and in truth many people have difficulty accurately defining what genius menas." However, the book is mainly comprised of a series conventional I.Q. and knowledge tests--little more than half of the written material is devoted to defining genius and unique styles of testing.

As a result, the book does not contain enough testing material to be a sound puzzle book, and the genius-related information is too broad to be insightful.

Father and Daughter Tales (An Abbeville Anthology)
Published in Hardcover by Abbeville Promotional (October, 1997)
Authors: Josephine Evetts-Secker and Helen Cann
Average review score:

Great Idea
The idea is great of having father and daughter tales but to many of these stories focus on the evil step-mother and the young woman rescued by a wealthy man, who takes her away. I was hoping for stronger stories of the relationship between a father and daughter. I was also hoping for stronger female characters.

Contract Law: Cases, Materials and Commentary
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (December, 1995)
Authors: Sally Wheeler, Jo Shaw, Shaw Wheeler, and Josephine Shaw
Average review score:

This book is absolutely awful - don't waste your money!
As a law student at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom I've been using this book for the last year to study the law of contract. Unfortunately my tutor for contract, and my personal tutor and the head of Leeds' Law Faculty is Professor Sally Wheeler - author of this book and her friend Jo Shaw is also a senior lecture here. The book concentrates mainly on the theoretical basis behind empirical studies of contract law and from experience is a complete waste of time & money.

I don't wish to pass comment on the writers as people - I'm sure that they are both extremely knowledgeable academics - however from my experience I would not advise people (law students) to buy this book for the simple reason that it is far to theoretical and academic to be of much use to a beginner to Contract Law.

The book contains huge swathes of quotation from a wide range of eminent academics and comprehensive but very dull extracts from all the major cases but it does so with minimal comment or explanation and ends up confusing rather than educating.

Overall a poor buy - sorry Sally it has to be said!!

My Arctic Journal: A Year Among Ice-Fields and Eskimos
Published in Paperback by Cooper Square Press (April, 2002)
Authors: Josephine Peary, Josephine Diebitsch Peary, Robert E. Peary, and Robert M. Bryce
Average review score:

Ruined with anti-Peary intro
This marvelous Josephine Peary classic of women's exploration is a public domain work that anyone may reprint. This facsimile version has poorly rendered photos and a depressing introduction. Josephine was a fearless pioneer with her own side arm and a Winchester rifle to hunt even 4,000-pound walrus! She tirelessly worked with the Eskimo women learning their language and organizing the sewing of clothing from furs for her husband's expedition. However, this "new" introduction is overly long, overly negative, and reveals an agenda with the events 17 years later when Peary reached the North Pole. Skip the intro! But do enjoy Josephine's story that is intelligent, detailed, and very nicely written.

Patisserie of Vienna
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill (September, 1988)
Author: Josephine Bacon
Average review score:

This cookbook just looks pretty.
This seems to be one of those cookbooks that just looks pretty but no one bothered to test the recipies. Don't attempt anything in this book without allowing for plenty of time to perfect the recipies. Unless your a cordon bleu-trained pastry chef the directions are way too vague. Proportions are off for various componets as well as with individual ingredients. If you like pretty pictures of food this is the book for you. If you want usable recipies for great desserts you'll be very very disapointed...and feel the need to write a review. I have to wonder if the author has ever been in a kitchen

Spanish Teacher's Book of Instant Word Games: Over 160 Ready-To-Use Activities, Puzzles, and Worksheets for Grades 7-12
Published in Spiral-bound by Center for Applied Research in Education (October, 1996)
Authors: Josephine Carreno and Josephine Carreeno
Average review score:

Disappointed
I teach level 1 and 2 Spanish. I was very disappointed that I will not have a use for this book after I paid so much for it. The activities do not align with my text vocab or my State Standards. Some of the puzzles are confusing and the difficulty is beyond the 7 -12 ability. In order to use many of the activities I would have to modify them to the point that it is no longer worth it. If I had had the opportunity to preview the book first I would have never bought it. Shame too, because I am sure a lot of work went into putting it together.

Supertraining Your Dog
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Pocket Books (May, 1989)
Authors: Paul Loeb and Josephine Banks
Average review score:

This book belongs in the trash
I am a dog behaviorist but I love to collect old breed and training books. The other day I came across this book and browsed through it. I could not believe the crap in this book, tabasco on your dogs gums for soiling in the house? Slap him real hard so that he knows he did wrong? Put vinegar on his nose so that he knows it is your house and not his? Time we educate the public with some kind and intelligent ways to train our dogs.
